Mimics

About The Work

  • This series of three coil-built ceramic vessels explores psychological themes of attachment, specifically the development and effects of over-accommodation in relationships. Drawing from the “Chameleon Effect” which refers to the unconscious mimicry of social cues. The vessels utilize abstracted reptilian forms and symbolic openings to represent mimicry, self-erasure, and eventual self-preservation. The first vessel evokes the beginning stage of people-pleasing within co-dependent dynamics, its form referencing an egg-like origin. The second, more overtly chameleon-like, reflects the intensification of mimicry and growing internal discomfort. The final vessel symbolizes a tentative emergence from this cycle: upward-reaching horns denote boundary-setting, while inward-curled limbs reveal the ongoing struggle to maintain autonomy. Together, the vessels reflect identity shaped and strained by external validation and internal conflict.
