Self-Portrait Bust

About The Work

  • This ceramic bust explores the layered experience of trauma through duality and symbolism. Featuring two interconnected faces—one embodying disgust, the other blissful denial—the piece reflects the tension between internal struggle and outward presentation. A swirling chest pattern evokes anxiety and shame, while a faux copper patina finish suggests resilience, referencing how real patina strengthens metal. Inspired by research on trauma and stigma, the sculpture uses texture, expression, and weathering to visualize emotional survival. Though intensely personal, the work invites viewers to consider their own dualities and hidden scars, challenging the assumption that healing always looks beautiful.
